Here is what just happened and why every professional in the energy, sustainability, and policy sectors should be paying attention: • An NYC official recently recommended that residents set their air conditioners to 78°F to help relieve the strained power grid. • This standard, common-sense advice sparked an immediate political uproar online, with critics labeling the thermostat recommendation as extreme. • The irony? The exact same guidance has historically been standard policy for the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and has been echoed by leaders across the political spectrum during extreme weather events. • Yet, within 24 hours of the controversy, the DOE quietly scrubbed roughly 6,000 web pages dedicated to energy conservation and efficiency advice. As professionals, we rely on data, consistency, and public education to build resilient power grids and drive sustainability forward. When basic conservation facts are treated like political liabilities and erased out of suspected pettiness, it sets a dangerous precedent.
