At first glance, these images might look like delicate flowers, but these stunning images were captured using a ZEISS Axio Imager.A2 microscope and depict #FossilizedCorals. 🪸 Over millions of years, silica has gradually replaced the original calcium carbonate, forming these petal-like structures. This rare form of preservation results in striking variations from specimen to specimen, ranging from light, opal-like silica to dense chalcedony. Agatized fossil corals are even used in jewelry making and can display colors ranging from white and pink to brown, gray, black, yellow, and red. A true bouquet of colors, shaped by the depths of time. On today’s #WorldMicroscopyDay, we’d like to dedicate ourselves entirely to the wonders of microscopy and remember how science helps us discover beauty that endures far beyond fleeting moments. 📸 Images courtesy of Norm Barker, Johns Hopkins ZEISS Microscopy #ZEISS #Microscopy #FossilCoral
