Wallace Magalene, goalkeeper at Zimbabwean club CAPS United, had his contract terminated this week. He made a serious error in the 27 June match against Triangle United, which gave away a goal. He was immediately substituted off and was later released by the club. It is reported that his employer suspected that he’d deliberately let the goal in to try to fix the match. Zimbabwe Premier League players probably typically earn $500 to $1500 per month. The competition is widely offered for betting all the same. It’s common for African clubs to terminate the contract of players they suspect are fixing. Clubs take this sort of action far more than football associations do. No evidence has been provided to back up the claim that Magalene fixed the match. The mistake looks bad on video, but many goalkeeper mistakes look bad. His career has now been severely damaged with no real signs of due process.
