I am incredibly proud of my medical student, Noor Elabd , for presenting our work at the British association of dermatology meeting and publishing our abstract in the British Journal of Dermatology. Our study, “Diagnostic Accuracy of Artificial Intelligence in Dermatology Across Skin Colour, Ethnic Background and Fitzpatrick Skin Types,” highlights an important challenge in the development of AI for dermatology in skin of color! AI-based dermatology diagnostic tools demonstrate lower diagnostic accuracy for darker skin tones, largely due to the underrepresentation of these skin types in training datasets. There is still a significant work to be done to improve AI for skin of color and to reduce disparities in dermatologic care. Congratulations, Noor, on this outstanding achievement.
