Why does the modern medical CV now include “content creator”? A panel on social media in medicine would have sounded strange five years ago. I'm glad that's not the case anymore. 😊 Most people see the output of medical content creators. But sometimes this raises more questions than it answers. Questions about balancing authenticity with professionalism online. Are we oversharing only the glossiest bits of our lives, and is there a responsibility to be more balanced with our content? Do medical professionals even deserve a space in a world driven by algorithms and engagement metrics? This weekend, I had the opportunity to speak at the Social Media Summit hosted by Anglia Ruskin University Women in Medicine Society and King's College London KCL Women In Medicine Society, alongside an incredible panel of doctors and creators shaping the future of medicine online. Between us, the panels reached a combined audience of over 800,000 but the most valuable part of the conversation was not the numbers. It was the honest discussions we had about about: • Growing on social media without losing your voice • Navigating professionalism as a medical student online • The pressure to educate, entertain and stay evidence based • And the reality of building in public in a field that is still learning how to engage with digital platforms It was interesting to share the panel with Professor Ahmed Hankir MBChB MRCPsych bringing the perspective of psychiatry and education and Dr. Daanish M. shared a refreshingly honest take on productivity and what it takes to show up online long term. I'm most grateful to the women in medicine and social media who attended the conference, including the committee members and fellow panellists. Sitara A. huge congrats on leading the ARU WIMS society, and Zainab A. for the KCL WIMS work. If you would like to connect, please drop your tags in the comments. 🥳 Shout out Humera Sattar and Zenub, Dr Yusuf Ben-Tarifite Parth Joshi Ardavan Moghtaderi Eniola Salami for their insightful panel. Such a pleasure to see some of my online friends in person finally!! And shout out to my dad, who I love to bring along when I can, my greatest supporter who listens to my social media waffle all day long. 😂 Social media in medicine is still evolving. And you can start making an impact now, screen the messaging you're portraying online. Stick to truthful content, within your competency, that remains kind and useful. Trying to cater to what you think everyone else "wants to see" can often erode at your own originality, so while there is a time and place for easy to digest content, make yourself the "niche". That's a lesson I'm still learning with my content. If you're thinking about navigating this space, I would be interested to hear your thoughts. And ofcourse, check out @medbaddieee on all platforms to support. 🥹❤️ #Conference #panel #speaker #MedicalStudents #Healthcare #SocialMedia #WomenInMedicine #contentcreation
