How can we save the endangered European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus)? A new study in the European Journal of Wildlife Research (Springer) analyzes 20 years of data to map the most suitable habitats for this species. The Findings: ✅ Strong preference for pastures & meadows near human areas. ❌ Avoidance of intensive arable land. ⚠️ Only 6% of optimal habitats currently have national protection.
