🎨 Simone Martini: The Artistic Soul from Siena to All of Europe When people talk about 14th-century Italian painting, Giotto usually gets most of the attention. But I've always felt that you can't fully understand this period without Simone Martini. While Giotto changed painting by making figures feel more solid and human, Martini chose a different path. His paintings are elegant rather than monumental. His flowing lines, brilliant gold backgrounds, and extraordinary attention to emotion became the foundation of what we now call the International Gothic style. ✨ What fascinates me most is that his career mirrors the spread of art across medieval Europe. He began in Siena, worked for the Angevin court in Naples, painted in Assisi, and eventually settled in Avignon, where the papal court became one of Europe's greatest cultural centers.
