đ¨Â #NewPreprint Alert! I'm very happy to share our latest research: âSpatially resolved fetal and maternal cell contributions to severe preeclampsiaâ Now available as a preprint: https://lnkd.in/emjdNgFb This project has been several years in the making, and Iâm over the moon to see it come together. #Preeclampsia is a serious gestational disorder, defined by new-onset hypertension and proteinuria. It remains a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, affecting 2-4% of pregnancies with over 46,000 maternal and 500,000 fetal and neonatal deaths per year . Yet, despite its impact, we still lack a cure or effective treatment. Using #single-cell and #spatial transcriptomics from multiple tissues of the fetal-maternal interface, we characterised both fetal and maternal cellular responses at high resolution. Our results reinforce the central role of the #placenta in preeclampsia and highlight previously novel contributions from maternal immune processes. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this multidisciplinary effort! đ Specially, thanks to all the patients who participated in the study. Sara Hillman UCL EGA Institute for Womens Health.
