Field Reality: Inside the Boots of a Mechanical Fitter on a Chemical Shutdown 🛠️⚙️ Before heading out to the Pilbara, it was in the heart of the heavy French petrochemical industry that I built my core foundation as a Mechanical Fitter. Looking back at the Line 16 major turnaround at Arkema FRANCE with Ponticelli Normandie. 6 weeks of total plant outage, tight schedules, and zero room for error. On a top-tier chemical site, a fitter’s scope is pure technical precision from start to finish: Technical Scope Breakdown: 🔓 Isolation & LOTO: Executing mechanical isolations, breaking containment safely, and verifying zero energy/zero pressure. ⚙️ Rotating Equipment & Powertrains: Overhauling electric motors, uncoupling drive shafts, inspecting bearings, belt replacements, and performing precise shaft alignment during reassembly to eliminate vibration. 🔩 Piping & Valve Maintenance: Stripping and replacing control valves, gate valves, and check valves; opening pump casings for internal inspections. 💎 High-Pressure Sealing: Cleaning flange faces, checking gasket seating areas, and installing stainless steel inner-ring spiral wound gaskets and graphite gaskets to withstand highly corrosive processes. 🔧 Controlled Bolting: Reassembling structural and pipe flanges using a strict star/cross pattern, torqueing to exact specifications (Nm) with torque wrenches to ensure first-time success on hydro-testing. 🦺 Heavy PPE: Performing precision work while fully suited up in hazmat gear and full-face positive pressure respirators depending on chemical hazards. This high-intensity environment taught me that in heavy industry, precision is non-negotiable.
