India's logistics journey has witnessed a remarkable transformation — from ancient trade routes to modern digital advancements such as GST and E-way bills. Logistics play a critical role in achieving the country’s Vision 2047, famously known as ‘Viksit Bharat’, by driving economic growth and enhancing its global competitiveness. To realise this vision, key areas such as infrastructure modernization, reducing logistics costs, digitalization, green logistics, and sustainability must be prioritized. At the same time, existing challenges persist, including high logistics costs (13-14% of GDP), infrastructure gaps, inefficient multimodal connectivity, and limited technology adoption. A multifaceted approach combining government initiatives, infrastructure development, technology integration, and policy reforms could be a solution. Initiatives like the National Logistics Policy, which aims to reduce logistics costs to 8%, Gati Shakti for seamless logistics connectivity through integrated infrastructure planning, and IoT solutions for monitoring infrastructure projects are pivotal steps in the right direction. Addressing these barriers can save India billions annually and significantly enhance its global trade competitiveness.
