“Are you a fan of Oura Ring?” A LinkedIn friend asked me this today. I think sleep trackers can be helpful, but only if we know how to use the data. Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch… They can increase awareness. They can show patterns over time. They can help you notice changes in sleep timing, resting heart rate, HRV, recovery, and consistency. But data is still just data. It can tell you what is showing up. It does not always tell you why it is happening. A low recovery score could come from stress, late caffeine, alcohol, overtraining, travel, emotional load, hormonal changes, illness, or an “always-on” nervous system. Same number. Different reason. Different approach. And this is where I think many people get stuck. They buy the device with good intentions. They wear it every night at the beginning. They check the score every morning. Then gradually, they stop. Simply because they are collecting data without knowing what to do with it. For some high performers, the tracker can even become another layer of stress. Instead of supporting wellbeing, it turns into self-monitoring. “Why is my score low?” “Why did my HRV drop?” “Did I sleep badly?” “What am I doing wrong?” The tool that was meant to support relaxation can quietly create more hypervigilance. So I do not see sleep trackers as good or bad. I see them as a compass, not the full map. They can help you ask better questions. But they cannot fully understand your real life. They cannot design a customised plan for your body, your schedule, your stress load, and your habits. And they cannot hold you accountable to take action. Do you find the data genuinely helpful? Or have you ever found yourself chasing the score… before eventually leaving the device in the drawer? 👉 I help high performers make sense of their patterns and turn them into practical, personalised next steps. 👉 Send me a DM if you’d like help turning your data into action.
