Factories, hospitals, logistics companies, and more require good data to optimize their operations, but none of the systems come with this data neatly packaged. It’s the job of expert engineers called Operations Researchers to translate these complex, physical-world systems into mathematical equations that can be optimized. Public transit is a great example: Operations researchers must evaluate a variety of real-world factors, such as traffic patterns, cost per vehicle hour, passenger demand, and geographic constraints, in order to plot out routes that ensure good service (coverage and frequency) without wasting resources. While powerful technology already exists to solve these puzzles, it can take an army of consultants to translate the messy, ever-changing scenarios from the physical world into the mathematical representations that optimization tools require. A group at X recently published research demonstrating how AI can help generate this math in seconds. The team’s work signals a compelling new approach to Operations Research, which touches many of the industries we rely on every day. Read more from Antonio Papania-Davis: https://lnkd.in/gyG6J9yZ
