“In a disaster, seconds and minutes count. People’s lives are on the line.” - Andrew Ngui, Chief Digital Officer, City of Kansas City, MO. Bellwether, X’s moonshot to understand and anticipate changes across the planet, recently partnered with Kansas City officials to explore how its damage assessment technology can help emergency teams respond to extreme weather more quickly and effectively. After a severe storm hits, the city sends groups of volunteers to go out into the affected neighborhoods on foot and manually survey structural damage with clipboards and pens. The process can take hours, or even days, to determine whether areas qualify for critical state and federal aid and how to allocate those resources. Kansas City officials used Bellwether’s AI and geospatial tools alongside an analog, boots-on-the-ground team to survey the impact of a simulated storm during a live disaster drill. Analyzing overhead drone imagery captured of the area, Bellwether successfully mapped the structural damage of an entire test neighborhood in just 45 minutes—matching the human assessments with 96% accuracy.
