There are two kinds of work, says Dan Bladen, CEO of Kadence: • Heads-up: direction-setting, collaborative decisions, high-bandwidth conversations that benefit from being in the same room. • Heads-down: focused execution, deep build cycles, the kind of work where interruptions are the enemy. The mistake many leaders make with RTO, according to Dan: Mandating in-office time for work that should be heads-down. “Having engineers getting distracted, ‘hey, what are you doing over here,’ that’s not where most of them want to be,” he says. “They want to be plugged in, Red Bull on hand, going for it.” Bring people together for heads-up work. Protect their time for everything else.
