Mick normally leads the Council’s recruitment team, providing strategic advice, oversight and assistance on all things recruitment. But when the COVID-19 pandemic began, and Council froze all recruitment, the nature of his job changed dramatically. With many Council facilities closing and the requirement for new services popping up, Mick found himself working on a new piece of work focused on redeployment – assessing the skills and qualifications of staff members in roles with core duties that have been affected by the pandemic, and then working with the staff members to place them in new roles on the frontline. “This has been an interesting piece of work. We’ve seen staff redeployed to different areas of the organisation – like managing PPE, providing support over the phone to residents, staff helping in customer service, and some even out in public ensuring our streetscapes are clean and hygienic,” Mick said. “The constantly changing landscape of this pandemic has been an exercise in developing resilience, flexibility and contingency planning,” Mick said. “They will be lessons that will continue to serve me. I am enormously proud of the work that our organisation is providing to the community.”
