⚠️Hungary is effectively losing its Eurasian lynx. Recent findings from a three-year cross-border monitoring effort in the Carpathians by #WWF and partners paint a worrying picture for one of Europe’s most elusive predators. 🔴The Slovak-Hungarian border region, once home to a thriving lynx population, is witnessing a dramatic decline, with the species effectively disappearing from #Hungary. 🟡In the Slovak Karst region, only two adult lynxes remain. 🟢Yet this is not just a local story. Lynx populations depend on connected landscapes that allow animals to move freely across borders. Protecting and restoring these ecological corridors is essential if we want Europe's largest wild cat to remain part of our natural heritage. As we mark #InternationalLynxDay, these findings are a stark reminder of how quickly wildlife populations can decline when connectivity is lost and conservation efforts fall short. The scientific assessment has been carried out between spring 2023 and spring 2026 as part of the EU-co-funded project LECA, aiming to ensure harmonious coexistence between large carnivores and local communities in the Carpathian region.
