Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder: The Nord Stream 2 fund was a response to US interference. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder stated during a meeting of the parliamentary commission of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern that the decision to create a fund to support the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was a response to pressure and sanctions threats from Washington, according to Russian media. According to him, the fund was seen as a tool to protect Germany's energy policy from external interference. Schröder also noted that the federal government, led by Angela Merkel, should not have taken into account the position of US senators on this issue. According to Schröder, the decision to create the fund was "extremely sensible." He noted that Germany wanted to abandon nuclear energy, relying on coal and gas generation, and that Russia was the only supplier of cheap gas. A State Parliament committee is investigating the activities of Klimastiftung MV, which was co-financed by Gazprom and supported the completion of the gas pipeline, including through intermediaries with companies willing to work in defiance of US sanctions. Schröder clarified that during its management of Nord Stream 2 AG, Klimastiftung MV served as a representative fund and was not involved in operational management or the construction permit process, although it discussed the project with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The fund was established in January 2021 at the initiative of regional authorities. Its official objectives included supporting environmental initiatives and completing the construction of Nord Stream 2. Since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Schröder has been criticized for his ties to Russia, but attempts to expel him from the SPD have been unsuccessful.
