WHH Washington DC Speaker Announcement | Gwen Mayes, JD, MMSc We are so excited to welcome another speaker at our Washington DC Summit on October 7! Gwen Mayes, JD, MMSc is a former physician assistant, healthcare attorney, and staunch patient advocate having lived with a rare, cardiac condition – hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – since birth. In 2019, following an extensive career in health policy in Washington, DC, she founded GwenCo Health, a consulting firm devoted to bringing the patient’s real world experience to the table on every level of health care. Gwen serves as a Patient Representative on the Oversight Committee for the American College of Cardiology’s National Cardiovascular Data Registry, a Women Heart Champion, a support leader for the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association, and Advisor to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)’s Clinical Effectiveness and Decision Science Committee. Her first book, More Person Than Patient: Finding Your Purpose and Power with Chronic Illness will be released November 3, 2026, published by Mayo Clinic Press. Professionally, Gwen led Advocacy Relations for Bayer Women’s Healthcare from 2013-2019. During the passage of the Affordable Care Act, she was the EVP of Public Policy for the National Patient Advocate Foundation; immediately prior she was the first Director of Government Affairs and Reimbursement for Abiomed, an innovator in cardiac device support, between 2005-2010. Gwen began her career at Emory University where she led the organ procurement efforts for the center’s heart transplant program. From 1988-1998, she served as a Public Health Analyst with the US Department of Health and Human Services, including the Surgeon General's Office and the Office on Organ Transplantation. In Kentucky, she served as the first Executive Director of the Office of Women’s Physical and Mental Health.
