Health information is now available through personal devices and other sources. We are at the beginning of an era of not only better understanding of health for people, but also possibility of new ownership structures that would enable an entire eco-system of research & innovation. In the blog by Sanaz Jamalzadeh, Ph.D. explores the intricacies of navigating the landscape of healthcare changed in info available for people to act on, the need for new literacy around interpreting the layer of AI technologies on top of this, the crucial role developers play in the making AI systems dealing with healthcare more trustworthy, and the changes needed in healthcare system itself that could further enable an informed & healthier population. Apart from personal devices, health data is of course also available in the form of electronic health records, lab reports etc, that are behind closed digitized systems in hospitals, public health institutions and so forth.  We can imagine and create conditions where citizens actually owning their own data such that: - data could be pooled outside of the systems that created them, - people decide how and who else can have access to this data, for which purposes, without compromising privacy and security. If these conditions are created in the future, we ask these questions on their impact: What would be the ROI for the person at the root of this data production? Where are the opportunities for new business models, companies & technologies that can facilitate these conditions? What kind of research and new knowledge - in so many areas – would this make possible, as it would make seen afflictions unseen by inequities in healthcare anywhere.
