AI is creating a paradox for women at work. It could widen gender gaps, or, if we are intentional, it could help close them. A new analysis from the Society of Women Engineers Research Division highlights the tension clearly: ⚡ Women remain underrepresented in AI, making up roughly 25–30% of the global AI workforce ⚡ Their representation drops further in leadership, with women holding fewer than 15% of executive roles ⚡ Research shows men are more likely than women to use genAI across nearly every dataset ⚡ Women engineers adopted AI at lower rates than men within 12 months of a tool’s launch ⚡ Women also receive less manager support and less praise for using AI at work At the same time, the data points to something important: 64% of women surveyed said AI improves their ability to shape their career path. Source: https://lnkd.in/egiUeTvN That is the paradox. AI can reinforce inequity when women are excluded from the roles, systems, datasets, and decisions that define how it is built and used. But AI can also expand agency when women have access, support, training, encouragement, and community. So, are women being invited, supported, recognized, and empowered to use AI in ways that strengthen their careers? Adoption does not happen in a vacuum. It is shaped by confidence, manager support, role models, workplace norms, access to learning, and whether women see themselves as participants in AI’s future, not just people affected by it. At Women Shaping AI, we believe this moment requires more than awareness. It requires practical learning, peer support, and spaces where women can ask questions, build fluency, share opportunities, and open doors for one another. Women Shaping AI is a global community where women from all walks of life come together to learn about AI, build confidence and capability, and open doors for each other.
