AI is already rewriting reality for billions of people, but too often, it is getting women wrong. A recent UN Women piece highlights what is at stake as generative AI becomes embedded into marketing, communications, media, hiring, creative work, and everyday decision-making. Source: https://lnkd.in/eQtDFUN3 The findings are stark: ⚡ A study of 133 AI systems found that 44% showed gender bias 26% showed both gender and racial bias ⚡ Only 24 of 138 countries assessed referenced gender in their national AI strategies ⚡ Women make up only 30% of the AI workforce globally ⚡ Women are nearly twice as likely as men to hold jobs at high risk of automation outside the AI sector This is a representation problem, a governance problem, a safety problem, a workplace problem, and a storytelling problem. AI systems do not simply reflect reality. They increasingly help create it. They influence who gets seen, whose stories are told, what images are generated, how workers are evaluated, who is considered “professional,” who is protected, and who is harmed. And when women are missing from the data, the design process, the governance conversations, and the leadership rooms, the result is predictable: AI scales the biases already embedded in society. UN Women is clear: gender equality and the rights, safety, and lived experiences of women and girls must be embedded across the entire AI lifecycle. Not after launch, not as a compliance add-on, and not only when harm becomes visible. From development to deployment to governance. At Women Shaping AI, this is exactly why we believe women need more than awareness of AI. We need access to learning. We need confidence to question the systems around us. We need communities that help us understand both the promise and the risks. And we need more women influencing how AI is built, used, governed, and evaluated. Women Shaping AI is a global community where women from all walks of life come together to learn about AI, build confidence and capability, and open doors for each other.
