“Justice must be designed into the code.” That line from Oh Nam Kwon captures one of the most important truths about AI: AI does not manufacture bias out of thin air. It learns from the world we give it. As Kwon put it, “If society contains discrimination, so does the data, and AI learns that discrimination, faster and more precisely than anyone.” We have already seen the consequences: ⚡ The COMPAS system in the U.S. predicted recidivism at nearly twice the rate for Black defendants as for white defendants ⚡ Amazon scrapped an AI recruiting tool after it consistently ranked women lower ⚡ A 2025 study found that AI systems made women appear younger, shortened their career histories, and rated older male candidates more favorably Source: Technology is a mirror, but today, that mirror is still tilted toward a narrow set of experiences. Globally, women make up only about 22% of AI researchers. In Korea, women are 54.9% of university graduates but hold only 12.4% of leadership roles in science and technology. That gap affects the questions that get asked, the problems that get solved, and the assumptions that get embedded into our systems. As Kwon said, “We don't need faster technology. We need better questions.” And better questions come from people with different lived experiences, different perspectives, and different ways of seeing the world. This moment requires more women not only using AI, but helping build it, govern it, and challenge it. Women Shaping AI exists for exactly this reason. Women Shaping AI is a global community where women from all walks of life come together to learn about AI, build confidence and capability, and open doors for each other. Because when more women are in the room, we ask better questions and build better technology. If that resonates, we’d love to have you join us: www.womenshapingai.com #womenshapingai #ethicalai #responsibleai #futureofwork
