We’re honoured to share that at the 2026 National Awards for Local Government, we were awarded the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Recognition Award for the Illawarra Indigenous Business Expo. Established by Wollongong City Council in 2023, the Expo was delivered by Council for its first two years before strategically transitioning to community led management. The Expo has grown into a regional event celebrating and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses. Now led by a local Aboriginal-owned business, with ongoing Council support, the Expo creates a welcoming space for First Nations businesses to connect, showcase their work, build partnerships and access new opportunities. It’s also guided by an Aboriginal-led working group of community leaders, and business experts, ensuring it remains grounded in cultural respect and community priorities. Each year, the Expo continues to grow, highlighting Indigenous talent, innovation and diversity, while delivering economic, social and cultural benefits for the region.
