Living life on your own terms feels easy right? Sure, right up until you try it inside the mess of real life: work, family, expectations, money, and that endless pressure to stay "reasonable." So, many Gen X women grew up steeped in pop culture promises of freedom, yet still carry the weight of societal conditioning into midlife. In this weeks #SayitSister podcast episode, Lucy Barkas and Karen Heras-Kelly talk about the coming-of-age story, in your 40's and 50's. The shift begins the moment we stop performing the role of harmoniser and caregiver, the one who smooths everything over, and start asking sharper questions instead. What do I want now? What do I need? And what am I willing to commit to so my life actually feels like mine? This is where personal growth and self-leadership meet everyday reality. You don't always need to overhaul your entire life. Sometimes you design "pockets" of freedom, small, deliberate spaces that bridge the gap between a dream and a sustainable lifestyle. This matters especially during perimenopause and menopause, when identity, energy, and priorities are already shifting under your feet. We challenge the words that try to shrink us. A phrase like "women of a certain age" works like a social warning label. It reinforces shame around ageing and menopause, and it gently invites women to fade into the background. Then there's the fear of being seen as "crazy cat lady" or "too much," the kind of label that pushes women straight into self-censorship. Reclaiming your wildness isn't about partying or chaos. It's about an alive, electric energy that moves things forward, creates safety in a group, and gives other women silent permission to be fully present too. For many women, there's another layer, the relief of an ADHD diagnosis. Suddenly a lifetime of being called loud, bouncy, intense, opinionated, or simply "wrong" starts to make sense. When you understand a neurodivergent brain, you stop reading your difference as a personal flaw and gain acceptance. Living life on your own terms isn't a single brave leap. It's a daily practice of honesty, boundaries, and creativity. It's choosing yourself, again and again. Listen to the pod, let us know what you think, and how you are choosing you. #women #wisewomenlead #womenwholead
