A $29 million Harbor Assistance Program grant announced by Governor Tony Evers will allow one of the country’s premiere shipbuilders, located in northeast Wisconsin, to produce the next generation of navy ships. The grant will fund needed improvements at the Port of Marinette, ensuring that Fincantieri Marinette Marine can build larger vessels and compete for ongoing U.S. Naval contracts. With 1,500 full-time employees and another 1,000 suppliers and customers working on site every day, the company’s success is vital to the local economy. “The ripple effect of this grant will be felt statewide,” said Craig Thompson, Wisconsin Department of Transportation secretary-designee. “Wisconsin’s ports are major economic hubs generating thousands of jobs.”
