Five rings. One global movement. The Olympic rings are one of the most iconic symbols in the world. WIPO's Nairobi Treaty helps safeguard the Olympic symbol from unauthorized commercial use. Adopted in 1981, the Treaty requires its members to protect the Olympic symbol – five interlaced rings – against use for commercial purposes, including in advertisements, on goods, and as a mark. By protecting the Olympic symbol, the Treaty helps preserve the integrity of the Olympic Movement and the intellectual property rights the International Olympic Committee – IOC uses to generate revenue to support athletes, National Olympic Committees, and the future of the Games.
