Use of intellectual property is rising across the sports industry ⛳⚽🏏 According to WIPO’s latest SPARK report, between 2016 and 2025, more than 65,700 sports-related inventions were recorded globally, alongside over 1.25 million newly registered trademarks, and more than 70,000 designs. Growth is strong across all types of IP, outpacing global averages: • Patent applications: +7.6% annually (vs. 4.4% overall) • Trademark registrations: +6.1% (nearly double the overall rate) • Design activity: +8.3% (far above the global average) Activity varies across various sports: golf, swimming and racket sports are among the most patent-intensive, while fitness technologies lead in design filings. Regionally, Asia accounts for the majority of patenting and design activity, while Europe leads in trademark activity, owing to the dense landscape of sports brands and clubs in Europe. Beyond the numbers, this WIPO Technology SPARK report highlights how advances such as wearable devices, data analytics, smart equipment and officiating technologies improve performance, fairness and fan engagement.
