Demand for alternative protein is soaring, but efficiently scaling production remains a major challenge. Swiss startup planetary has developed an innovative solution: growing mycoprotein – a nutritious, animal-free protein – from microbes in large-scale bioreactors integrated into existing sugar plants. This "plant-in-plant" model allows the company to reduce costs while supporting local production. Planetary SA has used WIPO‘s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to seek patent protection across multiple markets, supporting its international expansion through technology licensing and direct market entry. In this video, CEO David Brandes and Engineering Director Tanja Buch discuss their company’s production model and scaling journey, and how intellectual property is helping them grow their business globally. planetary is a winner of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards, which recognize startups and SMEs using intellectual property to drive both social and business impact.
