International patent applications filed through WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) continued to grow in 2025, reaching 275,900 filings worldwide – a 0.7% increase and the second consecutive year of growth. Digital communication remained the top technology of published PCT applications (at 11.1%) while semiconductor technologies recorded one of the fastest growth rates among all leading technology areas. While international trademark applications filed under WIPO’s Madrid System dipped slightly in 2025, design filing activity under WIPO’s Hague System grew by 5.2% to reach 28,588 designs – a record number.
