International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder that gender equity starts in our own workplaces. As planners and members of the Planning Institute of Australia, we advocate for inclusive, equitable communities - and we should apply that same lens internally across state government, local government and consulting – whether that is in an engineering firm or a local council. Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) Gender Equity Insights 2025 finds that we have a fragile and uneven workforce gender balance, with only 27% of organisations meeting the 40-20-20 benchmark. Some of our planning related industries, like real estate and construction, continue to be the worst performing for gender equity in terms of pay. If we’re serious about progressing gender equity and addressing workplace pay gaps, here are actionable ways planners can advocate within their teams: 🔎 Make the data visible and set leadership balance targets Support gender pay gap analysis and transparent reporting - you can’t change what you don’t measure. Link these to governance. 🗣 Consult staff meaningfully Push for surveys, focus groups and clear feedback loops - not just tick-box engagement. ⏳ Normalise flexible work for everyone Formal flexible policies help reduce structural barriers and support retention – enable advancement without fear of penalty. 📈 Make progression transparent Clear criteria, balanced panels, mentoring and sponsorship reduce inequities in promotions. 📊 Embed equity in strategy and situate ESG S metrics to WGEA Reporting Framework Set measurable targets, report on them, and hold leadership accountable. Ensure consistency and comparability can be achieved. On International Women’s Day and beyond, let’s lead the equity we advocate for in our cities within our own profession. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2026 #GenderEquity #PlanningProfession #WomenInPlanning
