‘To Serve…not to be served’ (1/2) More to come, I said…and here it is…it’s a lengthy one, but it’s worth it... The Gift, we concluded last time, is really what our individual leadership is all about. It’s WHAT makes us Leaders. For this truth to really sink in, let’s switch tactics for a bit; instead of first giving an explanation, I’d like to tell you a story…no…2 stories. One will most likely be familiar to you (when you recognize it ); the other may not be, but both absolutely encapsulate the core of today's take-away.. One of my all-time heroes in the field of Leadership Teaching and Development is the late Dr. Myles Munroe. The man was a powerhouse, a deep well of wisdom that I - and so many others – have been privileged to drink from. Now, way back in the 1990s he met another hero of mine, who has inspired millions with the story of his life, his personal courage and his sacrifice: Nelson Mandela. Soon after Mandela’s release from his almost 3-decade long incarceration, Dr. Munroe was honored to meet this icon and over dinner, worked up the courage to ask him a question. His question was: ‘Sir, if you were asked your view of leadership, what would you say a Leader is?’ The great man paused and thought for a while. Then he looked at Dr. Munroe and gave 5 answers; the most essential being: ‘Real Leaders don’t look for followers…followers are attracted to Leaders. Son, if you want to be a great leader, don’t desire Leadership. Desire to be a person of value’. It gets better though, hold on to this first story for a minute and stay tuned for the second... W.
