The future of energy provision is now widely discussed amidst the global oil crisis – and the news are relevant for Eastern Germany. The region has shown great potential to lead the energy transition and create value through the hydrogen economy. However, rigorous data is needed to understand the opportunities, challenges, and workforce needs of the sector. To address this topic, WifOR Institute and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems will conduct a new study for IWO, the Initiative for Hydrogen in Eastern Germany. The goal of the publication is to deep-dive into competencies, value chains, and labor markets in the hydrogen sector to support the implementation of projects. WifOR's Labor Market Team Lead Florian Fickler explains that the strength of the study “lies in the interplay of technological expertise, economic analysis, and the IWO's clear focus on Eastern Germany." He adds: “This provides a targeted and strong empirical foundation for strategic industrial and workforce policy decisions." WifOR has already conducted comprehensive research on the hydrogen economy in Eastern Germany. Our latest study commissioned by the Work and Environment Foundation of the IGBCE trade union focused on the availability of workers in the region, as well as proposed solutions to staff deficits.
