Two hard-won planning successes in the New Forest National Park Authority National Park: At PAD studio, we work extensively within sensitive and highly protected landscapes, where good architecture depends not only on design quality, but on judgement, experience and a clear understanding of planning policy. These outcomes were reached through a process that was, at times, prolonged and complex for all involved. Recently, two projects reached successful conclusions - Chapel House in East Boldre and The Dairy in Sway. Each followed a very different path, but together they highlight what it takes to deliver strong outcomes in challenging planning environments. At Chapel House, a carefully considered design was met with extended scrutiny. The challenge was not a lack of design clarity, but how to respond. Through a patient and measured process, the scheme was adapted without losing its underlying intent, leading to a well-resolved consent. At The Dairy, the position was different. The proposal was aligned with policy from the outset yet was refused. Rather than redesign, the decision was taken to challenge that position. The appeal was allowed in full, with costs awarded - confirming that the original judgement had been sound. Both projects required resilience and had real consequences for the clients involved. Together, they demonstrate something simple. PAD studio combines strong design with depth of experience, planning intelligence and the confidence to hold its ground when judgement and experience are needed.
