THE SMALLEST LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS STILL MATTER MORE THAN THEIR SIZE SUGGESTS In February 2026, the maintainers of Tiny Core Linux shipped version 17.0. A full graphical desktop edition for 64-bit machines weighs around 41 megabytes. The command-line edition is 24 megabytes. The kernel inside it is 6.18.2, and the C library is current. Around the same window, Alpine Linux pushed out its 3.24 series, with the base container image landing near five to eight megabytes. Both projects are doing something that looks almost contrarian against the direction most software has traveled. While mainstream desktop systems and cloud images keep adding weight, a small set of Linux projects keeps proving that a working operating system can fit in the space a single phone photo now occupies. https://lnkd.in/duWU9Y_e #linuxopensource #webiano #linux #megabytes #system #desktop #tiny #slitaz #slax #porteus #puppy #antix #damnsmalllinux #alpine #scratch #debian #dietpi
