Financial stress on the rise A Salvation Army national survey found that more than 9.7 million Australians started 2026 in debt, with 89% of people feeling the same or more stressed about their finances than they were last year. The graph shows the median weekly income of full-time adults working ordinary hours across Australia. It highlights the diversity in earnings between states and the ongoing gender pay gap – differences which can significantly affect superannuation balances and retirement outcomes later in life. As the cost of living continues to rise and the national unemployment rate reaches 4.5%, many Australians are finding it harder to keep up with everyday expenses.
