The Visiting Writers Series, developed by the English Department through the generous support of donors, welcomed celebrated poet Naomi Shihab Nye to campus last week. This program provides students with the chance to hear from renowned authors about their experiences as students, how they came to the work that they do, and why writing can be such an essential feature of a well-lived life. Naomi visited Harmony Button's Creative Writing class to discuss student poems, and in a special Arts Week assembly, Mario Chard discussed the craft of writing with Naomi as she shared some of her childhood experiences. She read "Kindness," a fitting celebration of our theme for the year—"With Kindness"—inspired by the beloved Nancy Nebeker.
