JUST PUBLISHED: Corwen WwTW Case study detailing a programme of targeted process and infrastructure upgrades to successfully deliver compliance with a tightened 1.0 mg/l total phosphorus consent, while improving hydraulic performance and operational resilience at this rural site. Owned and operated by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, the Corwen WwTW serves a population equivalent of ~2,000 and discharges to the environmentally sensitive River Dee, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The scheme was driven by tightening regulatory requirements set by Natural Resources Wales to support the achievement of good ecological status. The solution centred on chemical phosphorus removal via ferric sulphate dosing, integrated into a reconfigured inlet pumping main. This was complemented by significant upgrades across the treatment process, including new radial primary and humus settlement tanks, enhanced inlet screening with a 6 mm band screen, and hydraulic optimisation of existing stone media biofilters through improved distribution and removal of siphon constraints. Operational flexibility and resilience were key design principles. Existing assets were retained and refurbished where viable, including settlement tanks and biofilters, while new infrastructure - such as sludge storage facilities, imports handling, and final effluent washwater systems - enhanced overall process stability. A comprehensive EICA upgrade, including MCERTS-compliant monitoring, supports improved process control and performance assurance. The scheme was delivered on a live works within a flood-risk environment, requiring careful sequencing and resilient design solutions, including elevated infrastructure and flood-protected systems. Precast concrete construction reduced programme duration and site risk. The project demonstrates how targeted interventions can unlock compliance, extend asset life, and deliver sustainable environmental benefits. The upgraded works now provide a robust and flexible platform for future performance and regulatory challenges.
