𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 Sevcan Hakyemez-Paul, PhD (she/her) is a Scrum Master in Automation and Control at Wärtsilä, supporting the teams that develop software for our marine and energy engines. What keeps the role meaningful for her is the continuous learning it demands and the opportunity to help teams grow and improve together.   With a background in educational sciences and over a decade in the field of education, Sevcan saw how closely Scrum Mastery connects to pedagogy, team dynamics, and human development. Moving into tech during her PhD was a deliberate choice: a chance to apply those skills in a new context and stretch her own capabilities.   There are still misconceptions about the role. Scrum Masters are sometimes seen as assistants or process gatekeepers, when in reality the work centres on creating clarity, enabling collaboration, and supporting teams through complexity. Her story reflects Wärtsilä’s broader commitment to challenging stereotypes and advancing equality in technology and engineering.   As Sevcan puts it with honesty and humour: “I am a non‑engineer, neurodivergent immigrant woman working in software at a machinery‑based company — my mere existence in this company challenges stereotypes.”   The journey hasn’t been without doubt. In demanding moments, conversations with fellow Scrum Masters, sharing vulnerability and experience, made a real difference. That support reminded her that growth is collective, not individual.   Her advice to girls and women considering similar paths is simple: Be relentless. The industry moves quickly, and expanding your skills with curiosity and intention is key to finding your way.
