Twenty-two years ago I had the honor of going to Normandy with Chris Hill, U.S. ambassador to Poland at the time. Chris’ knowledge of the d-day beach landings and the area was extraordinary. The tour of the graves and monuments was humbling. As Colin Powell once stated, we never asked anything of the countries involved in the war but space to bury our dead. When citizens say, “I’m proud to be an American, they should reflect on the soldiers’ sacrifice that still allows us to say those words.
