🌍✈️ Antarctica is one of the planet’s last truly pristine regions, home to unique biodiversity and fragile ecosystems that depend on a delicate balance. However, human impact is growing: tourism has increased tenfold since the 1990s. Together with colleagues, Machiel Lamers studies how tourism and scientific activities affect this vulnerable system. In this short video, Machiel shares how one moment between tourists and penguins led to a much bigger research agenda on governing tourism and environmental change. As tourism continues to grow, key questions arise: how do we balance access to this unique wilderness with the need to protect ecosystems? What does responsible use of such remote land and water areas really mean? And how can we safeguard these environments for the future?
