๐Ÿซ›๐Ÿฅฃ In the FIBERME consortium, we harness artificial intelligence (AI) to predict fiberโ€“microbiome interactions and enable fiber-rich foods tailored for optimal health benefits. So that the industry can move toward more targeted applications. Let's dive further into this project! ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐—น๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜€: โ€ขย  AI-powered fiberโ€“microbiome predictions โ€ขย  Insights on plant-based fiber effects โ€ขย  High throughput microbiome screening โ€ขย  Link from in vitro to in vivo results โ€ขย  Expertise on practical implications for health and product innovation ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ FIBERME examines plant-based fibers to determine which fractions or combinations most effectively support (gut) health. Specifically, we look at fibers that can enhance microbial diversity and stimulate beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. We are creating a database of over 2,000 lab-based fermentation studies that show how different fibers affect gut microbiota composition and functionality. They also reveal the biochemical reactions through which gut bacteria metabolise fibers, providing insight into links with fermentation, disease prevention, and overall gut health. ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ A key innovation within FIBERME is its AI-driven prediction model. Combining data from human studies and fermentation analyses, the model forecasts how different dietary fibers affect the gut microbiome. This enables the food industry to design personalised, fiber-rich products that promote specific health outcomes. The project also identifies fiber blends that may enhance short-chain fatty acid production, reduce inflammation, or strengthen gut barrier integrity. This supports the development of next-generation fiber formulations. A human study will help validate laboratory findings and further refine the AI model. ๐Ÿค FIBERME brings together partners including: Unilever, Cargill, dsm-firmenich - Health, Nutrition & Care, Shijiazhuang Junlebao Dairy Co., Ltd., Dossche Mills NV, Ingredion Incorporated, Mars, Sigma Alimentos and WUR. Project results are expected in April 2028.
