🛰️ New warning system detects forest disturbances in Europe almost in real time   Forests across Europe are under pressure from logging, wildfires, storms and pests. Researchers at Wageningen University & Research have developed a detection system that can identify forest disturbances in near real time using radar data from the Sentinel-1 satellite constellation.   By combining satellite radar images with temperature data (ERA5-Land) and forest type information from the Copernicus ECMWF programme, the system can distinguish real disturbances such as logging or fires from seasonal effects like frost or leaf changes. This significantly reduces false detections and enables year-round monitoring of forests across Europe.   The system helps reveal patterns across Europe, from winter harvesting in Northern Europe to summer wildfires in Southern Europe.
