Forests play a crucial role in achieving climate targets. But what do specific forest management measures actually deliver in terms of CO₂ storage? New factsheets provide key figures to help estimate how much carbon is stored through measures such as preventing deforestation, delaying timber harvest, planting new forest and allowing natural regeneration. They are a valuable tool for forest managers, policymakers and advisers working on climate-smart forest management. “We’ve given the factsheets a thorough revision, refining the breakdown by soil type and tree species and bringing the figures up to date with our latest research,” says researcher Erik Roest. Preventing deforestation delivers the most immediate gains: clearing existing forest releases nearly 500 tonnes of CO₂ per hectare on average. Beyond climate impact, many forest management measures also strengthen biodiversity, improve water retention and enhance recreational value. The factsheets are available in Dutch. Curious?
