70 years ago, we gave the world a template. Today, we're redefining it. In 1956, Volvo fitted its Amazon with a two-point cross-chest diagonal belt, helping introduce safety belts to the European passenger-car market. In 1959, the Volvo PV544 became the world's first car to feature three-point safety belt as standard, invented by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin. We opened the patent for free. The three-point belt is now standard in virtually all modern cars worldwide and is estimated to have saved over a million lives. Earlier this year, we launched the new EX60, which features the world's first multi-adaptive safety belt. Using real-time data from interior and exterior sensors, it knows your height, weight, and seating position. It understands the crash type and instantly customises protection. From the Amazon to the EX60 – 70 years later, the legacy lives on.
