I think it's important to clarify a few comments around how recruiters communicate in a modern world. ๐๏ธ Instant messaging apps are one of the most effective ways to keep candidates engaged and reduce time-to-hire. When I mentioned how important instant messaging is to the interview process, I was greeted with this comment: "But not as good as actually picking up the phone. The one thing I don't get about Gen Z; if we talk, we are dedicating our time to each other." So a few thoughts: โ โคต๏ธ I am not Gen Z, but I'll take that as a compliment on Father's Day. Recruiters spend significant time on the phone at the start of a process understanding candidate motivations, career goals and client requirements. Recruiters conduct interview preparation calls. I have two scheduled today on a Sunday :) Every recruiter would love daily phone calls with hiring managers to build relationships and keep processes moving. But newsflash ๐๏ธ recruiters are not the most important person in a hiring manager's day. Instant messaging gets faster responses. Whether it's interview availability, CV feedback, clarifying a requirement or discussing an offer, speed matters. It reduces recruitment bottlenecks. CV feedback times can move from days to hours through a simple message. Scalability. When managing 10-20 live vacancies at once, instant messaging keeps multiple processes moving simultaneously. Time zones matter. I run a global business. A message sent in the UK is often waiting for a US hiring manager when they start their day. Calls are for complexity. Messaging is for coordination. Calls are for relationship building, qualification, interview preparation, negotiation and solving difficult problems. The best recruiters don't replace phone calls with instant messaging. They use both, at the right time, for the right reason. Instant messaging hasn't replaced phone calls. It's removed unnecessary phone calls and values the relationship with hiring managers. Please note: โฐ *Most clients don't have organised feedback loops and therefore time to hire goes from 10-14 days to 30+ days.
