Most people remember Johnny Brown as Nathan Bookman, the lovable building superintendent on Good Times. But before he ever walked into the Evans family apartment with that big smile and perfect comic timing, Johnny Brown had already lived a full entertainer’s life. Born June 11, 1937, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Brown was more than an actor. He was a singer, comedian, stage performer, and all-around showman. Before television made him familiar to millions, he won an amateur night contest at the legendary Apollo Theater, performed in nightclub shows, and recorded music for Columbia and Atlantic Records. He also became a regular on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, one of the biggest comedy shows of its era, where his singing, impressions, and comedic timing helped make him a familiar face before Good Times. Then came Bookman. On Good Times, Johnny Brown turned a side character into someone viewers never forgot. Bookman was teased, joked on, and called “Buffalo Butt,” but Brown gave him warmth, humor, and heart. He wasn’t just the superintendent — he became part of the building, part of the family, and part of the culture. His career also included Broadway, commercials, and appearances on shows like The Jeffersons, Family Matters, Martin, Sister, Sister, The Jamie Foxx Show, and more. Johnny Brown passed away on March 2, 2022, at the age of 84. But every time somebody says “Bookman,” we remember the man who made that name legendary. Drop a 🖤 if Johnny Brown made you laugh.
