🇮🇹 SAN LORENZO FUORI LE MURA La primitiva basilica, eretta nel IV secolo dall'imperatore Costantino sulla tomba del martire, fu rimpiazzata da una nuova chiesa all'epoca di Papa Pelagio II (579-590). Con l'abbandono della primitiva basilica a favore della seconda chiesa di Pelagio, Papa Onorio III iniziò dal 1217 grandi lavori di ampliamento di quest'ultima, dotandola di meravigliosi affreschi. Sfortunatamente, il 19 luglio 1943, durante la seconda guerra mondiale, la chiesa fu gravemente danneggiata da un bombardamento: pertanto, la facciata della chiesa che ammiriamo oggi è l'effetto della ricostruzione avvenuta nel 1948, che ha comportato purtroppo la perdita di gran parte degli affreschi originali. 🇬🇧 ST. LAWRENCE OUTSIDE THE WALLS The primitive basilica, built in the IV Century by Emperor Constantine on the tomb of the martyr, was replaced by a new church at the time of Pope Pelagius II (579-590). With the abandonment of the primitive basilica in favour of the second church of Pelagius, Pope Honorius III started from 1217 great works of enlargement of the building, equipping it with wonderful frescoes.
