The Victorian Bar was proud to support the launch of William Ah Ket: His Life and Times, a biography of the first Chinese Australian barrister to join the Victorian Bar and a trailblazer in the legal profession. The book was written by William’s daughter Toylaan Ah Ket (1920-2015) and published posthumously. Fittingly held in Ah Ket Chambers, the Honourable Chief Justice Debra Mortimer of the Federal Court of Australia, and Professor Andrew Godwin were among speakers at the launch. William Ah Ket signed the Roll of Counsel in 1904 (Bar Roll No. 88) at the height of the White Australia Policy. He would go on to build an extraordinary legal career, campaigning against racial discrimination and building a reputation as “a phenomenon at the Victorian Bar”. The biography encapsulates his spirit and determination to advocate for a fairer society for all.
