The Victorian Bar has a long and proud tradition of providing pro bono legal assistance that gives vulnerable members of the community the opportunity to access justice and defend their legal rights under Australian law. Since its establishment in 2000, the Victorian Bar Pro Bono Scheme has formalised the process for connecting help-seekers with barristers and expanded the reach of the Bar’s pro bono work. This work takes many forms, including advocating for human rights, environmental or social justice causes, and helping people from marginalised and disadvantaged backgrounds. It makes a difference. In partnership with Justice Connect, the Bar now has direct referral schemes with the Federal Court of Australia, Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (family law jurisdiction only), Supreme Court of Victoria, County Court of Victoria, Coroners Court of Victoria, Administrative Review Tribunal and VCAT.
