Hi, I’m Judex Rose. I began my journey with music long before coming to Australia. Growing up in Mauritius, music was my life. I spent over a decade playing in the Mauritius Police Band, fully immersed in performance and my identity as a musician. But when I moved to Australia, life shifted. There were new responsibilities, and although I continued playing with different bands, I wanted to reconnect with my real purpose in music. That’s when I discovered Victoria University and its Block Model. It gave me the flexibility I needed, and studying a Bachelor of Music didn’t feel like traditional university – it felt like stepping back into a creative space. After years away from study, adjusting was challenging, especially with new technologies, but I embraced it. I learned not only from the course, but from the people around me by immersing myself, listening and evolving with the industry. Along the way, I realised that while I was an experienced musician, I didn’t yet know how to teach within the Australian education system. That led me to pursue a Master of Teaching (Secondary). I wanted to give back through music, but more importantly, I wanted to learn how to translate my knowledge into meaningful learning for others, through authentic pedagogy. Coming from a very different education system, adapting to Australia’s inclusive and student-centred approach was inspiring. My placements were transformative, helping me understand how to connect with students and tailor learning to their individual needs. Now in my final year, I feel confident about what comes next. Alongside teaching, I’m preparing to launch an album – an exploration of identity, migration and self-discovery. This journey hasn’t just made me a better educator; it has also helped me truly understand who I am. #FacesofVU
